I: Suppression of inflammatory and allergic disorder, rheumatic disease, various skin disorders, various blood disorders like hemangioma and kasabach-meritt syndrome, emergency management of acute idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.
D: Adult - Initial dose: 4-48 mg/day depending on the specific disease. Children: Should be based upon clinical response. Treatment should be limited to the minimum dosage for the shortest period of time. If possible, treatment should be administered as single dose on alternate days.
CI: Hypersensitivity, elderly, pregnancy, nursing mothers or women of childbearing potential.
P: Corticosteroids should be used with caution in non-specific ulcerative colitis if there is a probability of impending perforations, abscess or pyrogenic infection. Pregnancy Risk Category C.
SE: Sodium retention, congestive heart failure, muscle weakness, steroid myopathy, steroid myopathy, osteoporosis, peptic ulceration with possible perforation and hemorrhage, abdominal distention, impaired wound healing, thin fragile skin, increased intracranial pressure, pseudomotor cerebri, development of cushingoid state, suppression of growth in children, posterior subcapsular cataracts, glaucoma, menstrual irregularities, decreased carbo tolerance.
